From Army Technician to Industrial Automation Expert: David’s Journey Through CAMPS, M2M, and BuildItWA
Transitioning from military life to the civilian workforce can feel like stepping into the unknown. For many service members, the challenge isn’t just about finding a job—it’s about discovering a career they’re passionate about. David’s story is a powerful example of how CAMPS and its Military to Manufacturing (M2M) program can help make that happen.
The Beginning: Discovering a New Path
David served for seven years in the Army as a 35T, specializing as a server technician. As he approached the end of his service, one thing was clear—he didn’t want to continue down the same path in the civilian world. His future started to take shape when he met CAMPS at a job fair on base.
“I met CAMPS at a job fair on post and instantly fell in love with the prospect of moving to a career in industrial automation,” David recalls. “I signed up on the spot to attend an on-post M2M workshop and met the rest of the CAMPS staff there.”
A Turning Point: The Power of Aptitude and Support
One of the pivotal moments in David’s transition was taking a proctored engineering aptitude test. His high score revealed that he was well-suited for the field of mechatronics. With CAMPS’ support and guidance, David enrolled in the Mechatronics certification program at Clover Park Technical College (CPTC).
“The mechatronics program at CPTC is well-structured to focus on real-world application,” David explains. “I quickly fell in love with the program and stayed to earn my Associate of Applied Science Technical Degree in Mechatronics. It gave me the perfect blend of skills, from programming to mechanical and electrical engineering.”
Finding the Dream Job: Connections Through CAMPS
After earning his degree, David reconnected with CAMPS and started applying to positions, including at Boeing. CAMPS played a pivotal role in connecting him with job opportunities through the BuildItWA.com platform. Ultimately, David accepted a position with Western Integrated Technologies (WIT), one of the many opportunities made possible through CAMPS.
“WIT offered a higher-level position and a better company culture,” David shares. “I’m now working my dream job there. We produce custom hydraulic solutions for major companies like Space X, Boeing, and Blue Origin, and I get to see projects through from start to finish.”
The Impact of CAMPS: A Thriving Career
In his role at WIT, David uses all the skills he gained during his mechatronics program. Whether he's collaborating with the engineering team, managing suppliers, or overseeing project fabrication and installation, his work is diverse, challenging, and incredibly rewarding.
“If I hadn’t found CAMPS, my plan would have been to continue deeper into a field of work that I hated,” David reflects. “Today, I’m passionate about what I do and feel that I’ve found my true calling. CAMPS supported me through every key step of my journey.”
A Success Story: David's Journey
David’s story is a testament to the transformative impact of CAMPS and Build It WA. For transitioning service members, finding the right career path can change everything. David is now thriving in a role that excites him, thanks to the mentorship and support from CAMPS.
“Thank you, CAMPS! Without your mentorship and expertise, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” David says.
David’s journey is just one of many success stories from service members who have found their path through CAMPS and Build It WA. We’re proud to play a part in helping veterans discover fulfilling careers in industries where their skills can shine.
